Red Maple Tree

This is a Red Maple tree that is in my neighbors yard. I thought it looked so pretty against the backdrop of the blue Colorado sky.

I Grow Good Weeds

In Colorado we do not get a lot of rain in the summer months. This dandelion blow away is a good example of what grows in my yard. Of course I am not using harmful chemicals to make my yard green, but at least I can eat my dandelion leaves in my salad.

A Pretty Colorado Rainbow

This pretty rainbow was across from my house yesterday afternoon. We seem to get a lot of them in the eastern part of the sky.

My Stunted Corn

This is a photo of part of my garden. This is the first year I gardened at this house and I have noticed that I definitely need to amend my soil a lot more than I did this year. The squash plants look fine and produce well, but my poor corn is stunted. Well I know that corn takes a lot of nutrients from the soil so I am thinking for next year planting some early peas and then tilling them into the ground to add much needed nitrogen. Well at least there is some corn cobs on the plants and although they are small you can still eat them.

Bucksnort Saloon in Sphinx Park Colorado

We went up to the mountains the other day for a little lunch at the Bucksnort Saloon. This true hidden treasure is nestled in the mountains in Sphinx Park near Pine, Colorado. On the drive there we drove down a narrow dirt road winding past Elk Creek, with its quaint little cabins hugging the edge of the stream. The building itself is an old mercantile store left over from when the railroad use to run through there. While we were there we were asked not to flush the toilets unless it was necessary due to their shortage of rainfall and the well was almost dry. They were serving food in plastic baskets lined with paper and using plastic forks so they did not have to wash dishes.

The wood beamed ceiling, walls and wooden tables were a collage of names that people had scribbled on with permanent markers and the waitress offered a marker to us so we could leave our mark in history too. The food was fine, but I thought expensive for such an out of the way little place. I don't think that I would want to try and drive to it on a snowy day. I do remember years ago that I had passed the saloon when it was extremely busy and saw cars parked precariously on cliff and rock edges, presumably, I have been told, parked there by their valet service.

Over all it was a fun day and something I'd recommend to anyone who comes to the mountains outside of Denver to visit the Bucksnort Saloon.

My Life In Colorado

This is a blog about living in Colorado and things that I encounter everyday. The photo above is a dilapidated building that I saw while taking an exhilarating drive across Oh My God Road (as the locals call it). The road is actually Virginia Canyon Road that runs between Idaho Springs and Central City, kind of a short cut if you don't mind the winding dirt road on the side of a cliff with no guard rails. This picture was snapped just before entering Central City and not taken on that breath taking part of the road because my knees were too weak to get out of the car. Well maybe next time I will be able to get the courage to take a few pictures of the steep drop from the road.
